Thanks the instructions seem to be working, will see in a day or two if this is the final solution. This problem is very frustrating and unfortunately there is no one-click solution for it. The encrypted passwords = yes option is in the configuration file, but no password for your account is in the smbpasswd file.
I even downloaded the Google Pack with the Spyware Doctor, but it completely messed with my computer.
