I'm not sure about removable media but I've been using "Zero Footprint Cryp" a free encryption software I found on CNET. The password can be as long as you like (a passage from a book if you want so it makes it impossible to crack).I have been using it for a year It's only limitation is it cannot read/write blu-ray, but you probably don't need that.
