I had to install nvidia-current from the repos and remove it again in order to delete all the remaining files. It is on adapter default right now. It didn't ask for a root password so I assumed it wasn't anything harmful. The time now is 01:37.
Download the 91.31 nvidia driver.This should fix it.Worked for me. So I did this sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg xserver-xorg-video-all sudo reboot Resolution got a bit better, but still no good.
Hopefully we can get this worked out and i can pass along some of the computer knowledge that i CAN figure out to other people. add the ppa. Loading... It works, at least as far as that problem is concerned.

I have used nVidia drivers from the website off & on over years without issue apart for odd glx folder/symlink problems.
